10 things your boss may never hear if you are using cloud-integrated storage

TOP 10 ROAD SIGN

It’s no secret that prices of cloud storage have been falling precipitously over the past few months, spurring many organizations to reconsider the economics of cloud-integrated storage. Although price drops are always beneficial for IT, often some of the less tangible benefits cloud may bring to storage management are just as important.

Think about some of the recurring IT hallway conversations and how cloud storage solutions can change them for the better. More precisely, it’s less about what is said and more about what no longer needs to be said, including:

  1. It’s time to decommission and replace more storage arrays
  2. NAS backups are exceeding our backup window again
  3. I’m traveling to the disaster site for disaster recovery testing
  4. I’m too busy handling storage hardware failures
  5. I’m too busy upgrading firmware
  6. Our storage budget needs to increase
  7. We need another forklift
  8. Tape recovery failed again
  9. We have tons of excess storage capacity (we already paid for)
  10. We are out of storage capacity

Now keep in mind cloud-integrated storage is not a cure-all for all data storage woes. It is not a direct replacement for every primary storage use case including OLTP and very latency-sensitive applications, but it can do wonders for managing unstructured data and nearly 80% of data that may sit on traditional storage that is less frequently accessed. This includes the seldom-used, often-maligned offsite tiers of storage used for disaster recovery.

What conversations is the cloud eliminating for you?
